Rowland pulls up stakes
May 19th, 2008. Filed under: Uncategorized.A PS story on Pleasant Rowland’s apparent departure from the village of Aurora, her pet project lo these many years. Her improvements to the town and her relationship with Wells College were not universally applauded by the locals; here’s a website presenting that alternative point of view.
Over 200 years ago, Aurora was the scene of the single most notorious incident of the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign, the destruction of the Cayuga village of “Peachtown” and the chopping down of hundreds of fruit trees by American troops. This was not only a military operation, but a reconnaissance expedition aimed at surveying Indian-held territory for use as future farmland and other “improvements.”
It’s very tempting to say “What goes around, comes around.” (Oops, I guess I just did…) Those who don’t like what she did in Aurora can call her Town Destroyer. But I suspect if you brought up the past to Rowland’s opponents, few of them would notice the irony.
