The Wreck of the Eliot Spitzgerald

November 13th, 2007. Filed under: Day One and Counting, NYRI.

(Sorry… sometimes you just can’t get an image out of your head, and “Spitztanic” and “Spitzitania” didn’t quite work for me…)

Well, it’s nice to know that now that he’s gotten wrapped up in an ethics controversy, now that his public approval numbers have sunk to new lows, and now that the Democratic presidential front-runner from his own state wants to have nothing to do with him… that Gov. Spitzer would like to take this moment to sue the pants off the federal government over NYRI.

“Gov. Spitzer has never been shy about going to court,” said spokesman Paul Larrabee. “Gov. Spitzer is willing to pursue legal options if he believes the state’s interests and rights are not being heard.”

Whew! Good to know he’s been saving all that remaining political capital for a rainy day.

Just looking for some firmer ground, he is… he knows how to sue, after all.

IMO Spitz needs some non-trust fund types to advise him on issues — but then again the volatility of his temper and refusal to listen makes that seem almost impossible.

I keep thinking back to how his first bid for Attorney General failed so spectacularly (’94, was it?) And then he came back and figured out how to be Eliot Spitzer. So, even though I am having a bit of fun with his troubles, (a) it’s not fun for the state and (b) this is just one year out of a four-year term.

I think the most appalling thing he’s done is not so much the original licensing proposal, but the way he turned around and got in bed with that RealID thing. He is the GOVERNOR of NEW YORK. Not the governor of some lesser state. And frankly he should have been devoting his energies to the NYRI issue (which is a states vs. federal government issue, even more than an upstate-downstate issue) a lot sooner.

Ellen, New York IS a lesser state, and it’s getting lesser by the minute with The Steamroller on the loose.

IMO a number of people in Albany are writing him off — one friend is working on something he’s going to call something like “The Late Great Eliot” or “The Last Days of Eliot Spitzer.”
